Phra That Phanom - the relics of the birthday on Sunday
There are many ancient religious monuments in Nakhon Phanom. The most highly revered is Phra That Phanom in That Phanom district which dates back to the time of the Sri Khottrabun kingdom. Both Thais and Laotians make their pilgrimage to this highly respected site to ask for blessings.
In Thai folk Buddhism, Wat Phra That Phanom is a popular pilgrimage destination for those born in the year of the Monkey. And people born on Sundays believe that if anyone comes to worship Phra That 7 times, they will be considered as "Children of the relics" and receive merit.
There is a person who respects a good and prosperous life.
Wat Okat Si Bua Ban or Wat Okat
This old sacred temple of Nakhon Phanom Province is located on the bank of the river, a minutes walk north of the Naga landmark. The temple houses two revered Buddha images as well as beautiful murals. Interesting sights inside the temple include the two identical “Phra Tio” and “Phra Thiam” Buddha images in Mara Vichaya Posture.
According to the legend, the images were created in the time of Si Khottrabun kingdom when King Si Khottrabun demanded to have a royal barge constructed. Once the vessel was completed, they pushed it into the Mekong river on a numbers of round logs underneath the barge. One log of Tio wood didn’t move as they pushed and kept straying away from the direction. It took a long time to finish moving the barge onto the river. They believed that there was a guardian spirit in that Tio wood. The King, therefore, decided to have the Tio wood carved into a Buddha image in the year 784 and organized a ceremony to celebrate the Buddha statue of the kingdom.
In the reign of the next king, King Khattiyawong, a fire incident burned down the hall of Phra Tio. The King ordered to have an imitation of Phra Tio carved from a sacred wood. However, Phra Tio statue was later found in Mekong river. It was brought to house alongside with the new Buddha image which was named as “Phra Thiam”.
Beautiful murals inside the main hall of the temple depict the life of Lord Buddha. Wooden plates on top of each pole are painted with pictures of angels inside glass pavilions, while the wall is painted with golden stars on red background. Each pole is painted in colorful Thai patterns. Both Buddha images are sacred icons of the city.

The temple is located on Si Thep road between Pho Si Alley and Rachawong Alley (close to the municipal community school). The Luang Pu Jahn Museum is found near Saraparnnusorn Building. Inside there is a life size statue of Luang Pu Jahn on a 3 level tall marble altar, covered with glass and surrounded of artificial lotus flowers. In the left corner of the hall, there is a 4 meter tall glass cabinet with an oil painting of Luang Pu in a wooden frame.
